Quick answer: Invite willing relatives, pick one seven-day window, and agree on how to celebrate participation. Adapt the activity or skip the leaderboard for anyone a step total would exclude.
Decide who the challenge is for
A family step challenge can give relatives in different households something easy to talk about. Start by asking who actually wants to join. A step count is not equally useful or accessible for every person. Relatives without a compatible phone, or who would rather skip scoring, can join a shared walk, photo prompt, or check-in arranged in the family chat. MovePeeps tracks the step competition, not those alternatives.
Keep the first round short: Monday to Sunday is enough time to test whether the format feels fun. Two to eight people fits a MovePeeps group. For a larger family, split into smaller groups or use a different arrangement everyone understands.
Choose a rule that fits different routines
A straight total is easy to explain, but it rewards people who already have more time or naturally walk farther. You can keep the leaderboard as a playful side note and celebrate other wins in your family chat: the funniest walking photo, the most walks together, or the person who found a new route. Those are social awards, not scores in MovePeeps. Decide what counts before the week begins. Do not add bonus points on Friday to change the standings.
If you compare steps, ask everyone to use their own connected health platform and check that it is recording before Monday. Someone carrying a phone only part of the day may see fewer recorded steps than someone wearing a watch; treat the result as a game, not a measure of effort.
Send an invitation people can answer
Family walking week? From Monday 5 October to Sunday 11 October, we will compare steps in our private group and share one good walk in this chat. Reply by Sunday 4 October if you want in; I will send the invite link. No daily target and no pressure if your schedule changes.
Replace the example dates with your own. For relatives across time zones, agree on when to announce the result after Sunday and give everyone time to sync. If someone is not interested, leave them out of the score and invite them to a walk instead. Draft your family invite if you want a starting message.
Make Sunday about the story
At the end of the week, ask each person for one small highlight. Maybe it was a walk with a parent, a quiet loop after dinner, or a short errand done on foot. Let the winner choose a cafe or next week's meeting place if that suits your family. For more variations, see walking challenge ideas.
Plan your first round
MovePeeps is being prepared for a private Monday-to-Sunday step competition for two to eight people. Members will connect their phone’s health platform and see the group’s step totals on one leaderboard. Join the waitlist to hear when the app is ready, or use the challenge generator to draft an invite now.
If a step total looks delayed or an invite does not work, visit MovePeeps support. See the privacy policy for what the app reads and shares.
