Quick answer: Use a spreadsheet for a one-off challenge when everyone accepts manual entry. Use an app when a small group wants connected step totals and a private leaderboard with less daily admin.
When a spreadsheet is enough
A shared step challenge tracker works well for a one-week experiment if every participant is willing to enter a number. You can choose unusual dates, include a larger group, or make your own scoring rule. The trade-off is the work: someone needs to check entries, resolve missing days, and update the standings.
Keep the sheet small. Use one row per person and columns for the seven challenge dates, a total, and a note for missing entries. Here is a Monday-to-Sunday example you can copy into a sheet:
Name Mon 5 Oct Tue 6 Oct Wed 7 Oct Thu 8 Oct Fri 9 Oct Sat 10 Oct Sun 11 Oct Total Notes
In row 2, put =SUM(B2:H2) in the Total column and copy it down. Sum only the seven day cells. A blank day means unreported, not zero effort, so treat the standings as provisional until your entry deadline. For custom dates, replace the headers before sharing the sheet.
Keep the sheet private
- Give view or edit access only to participants who agreed to share step totals.
- Decide whether anyone may repost totals outside the group; do not assume a shared link stays private.
- Set an entry deadline and remove access or archive the sheet after the round if the group wants that.
When an app helps
An app can take the routine entry and leaderboard work out of the group chat, provided everyone can connect a supported step source. Ask whether the app uses phone health data or requires a wearable, when scores refresh, who sees the totals, and what happens if permission is denied. A sync delay is still possible, so agree on a time to check totals before declaring a winner.
MovePeeps is a fit for two to eight people who want a private Monday-to-Sunday contest. It reads daily step totals from Apple HealthKit or Android Health Connect after permission is granted. It is not a flexible spreadsheet replacement for custom dates, manual bonus points, or a large event. Join the waitlist if that weekly setup fits; for more selection criteria, read how to choose an app for friends.
Make the decision in two minutes
- Need custom dates, more than eight people, or manual scoring? Start with a shared sheet.
- Have two to eight friends who want a private weekly board? Consider MovePeeps.
- Have mixed phone types? Check each person's health source before inviting the full group.
- Do not want to share step totals at all? Run a walking check-in in your chat instead.
Whichever tracker you choose, agree on dates, step sources, ties, and privacy first. Our rules guide gives you a short starting point. If the private weekly app format fits, check MovePeeps availability.
Plan your first round
MovePeeps is being prepared for a private Monday-to-Sunday step competition for two to eight people. Members will connect their phone’s health platform and see the group’s step totals on one leaderboard. Join the waitlist to hear when the app is ready, or use the challenge generator to draft an invite now.
If a step total looks delayed or an invite does not work, visit MovePeeps support. See the privacy policy for what the app reads and shares.
