Quick answer: Yes. A small group can compare its Monday-to-Sunday step totals without setting a daily target. Agree on the dates and counting source first, and make room for people who prefer a walking check-in without a leaderboard.
A challenge does not need a daily target
A group can agree to compare steps over one week without asking every person to reach the same number each day. The simple version is a Monday-to-Sunday competition: everyone who opts in connects a step source, the weekly totals appear on a private board, and the highest total finishes first. A day with fewer steps stays part of that person's week; it does not need a penalty or an explanation.
This still is a competition, so it may suit people who enjoy comparing totals. It does not make different schedules or abilities directly comparable. Ask the group whether a leaderboard sounds fun before choosing it.
Set only the rules you need
- Dates: State the Monday start and Sunday finish.
- Counting: Use each person's connected phone health source for daily step totals.
- Finish: Give phones time to sync before you agree on the result, and decide in advance how ties work.
- Privacy: Keep totals inside the invited group unless each person agrees to share them elsewhere.
No daily target is needed for these rules. If a member wants a personal walking plan, they can keep it for themselves and decide whether to mention it in the chat. The rules guide covers other decisions to make before the round.
Try a week without a target
Suppose four friends want a reason to walk more often, but their workdays look different. They agree to one Monday-to-Sunday round, compare the weekly totals, and send one Wednesday message about a walk they liked. One friend takes a longer weekend walk, another walks on short breaks, and nobody has to “catch up” to a daily number. On Sunday they check the totals after syncing, celebrate the week, and ask whether anyone wants another round.
That example uses one shared scoring rule. It does not require a prescribed number of steps or an app feature for individual goals.
If comparison is the wrong fit
Keep the walking invitation and remove the score. Each person can choose a walk that fits their week, send an optional midweek check-in, and share what worked on Sunday. This is a walking accountability group, not a step-total competition. It is useful when members do not want to connect health data or share step totals.
MovePeeps fits the competitive version: a private weekly board for two to eight people, using step totals from Apple HealthKit or Health Connect with permission. It does not set or track custom daily targets. Check availability if a weekly comparison sounds right for your group.
